Here are a few questions to consider when looking for dog-friendly accommodations (in no particular order). Some of the information may already be listed on the pet-friendly hotels' websites, or you might have additional questions of your own.
A couple of tips: Try to call during business hours, as many small to medium-sized establishments utilize a phone answering service in the evening. Also, if you are calling a chain, reach out to the specific location where you wish to stay rather than a general toll-free number. This way, you can ensure you receive the most accurate information regarding that particular dog-friendly hotel.
Do you have weight requirements?
In some places, dog-friendly is defined as "fits in your purse." Many hotels and inns set weight limitations on their overnight canine guests (luckily there are no limitations for human guests!), often restricting availability to small dogs.
Where are your dog-friendly rooms located?
Not infrequently, dog-friendly rooms are also designated as smoking rooms. Sometimes they are located in the back or have separate entrances.
Is there a place to walk your dog?
You want to be sure there's a safe, well-lit area for your dog’s essential walks.
Do you have beds, bowls, or crates available?
We recommend bringing your own, but sometimes it's impractical to carry all that extra gear, so it's good to know what pet travel tips are available.
Do you know of local dog walkers, pet sitters, or vets?
This is helpful information for emergencies or if you need a sitter. It also indicates how genuinely dog-friendly the establishment is.
Is there an additional fee for pets?
Many places charge an extra fee for dogs to stay in the room. We've seen fees ranging from $10/night to as much as $100. Some may also add a cleaning fee or security deposit.
Is there a security deposit?
Believe it or not, some establishments may require a hefty security deposit on your credit card, just in case your dog has a little mishap. Make sure to find out the amount, what it covers, and how to retrieve it later.
Are there restricted areas?
So, you’re enjoying your dream romantic inn, but there is one issue—your access is only through the dumpster area, and your dog isn't allowed in the lobby or near the fire. Make sure you clarify what areas of the property you can access with your dog.
How many dog-friendly rooms do you have, and where are they located?
In some locations, every room is dog-friendly, while in others, it may just be a select few. Knowing the number and locations can help you plan ahead. Some hotels might only permit dogs in smoking rooms, which isn’t ideal for every pet owner.
How many dogs are allowed?
Remember, dog-friendly doesn’t always mean accommodating multiple dogs. Many places limit the number to one per room, so if you have more than one, you may face challenges.
What paperwork do you need?
Almost every dog-friendly hotel will require proof of vaccinations. Be sure to gather the necessary documentation, and consider keeping it in your glove compartment so it’s not forgotten.
Do you exclude any breeds?
Sorry, pit bull fans. Some hotels may restrict specific breeds for insurance or safety reasons. Make sure to check if your dog is on the no-stay list. Sleeping in the backseat with a large dog in hot weather wouldn’t be fun!
Are there good places nearby to walk, swim, eat, or visit with your dog?
Guidebooks provide basic info, but local recommendations give you the best insights.
