New England's Dog-Friendly Beaches: Explore the Best Spots

Dogs and their people love the beach, especially when exploring the dog-friendly beaches of New England. With hundreds of miles stretching from the rocky Maine coast to the sunny shores of southern Rhode Island, there are plenty of options for traveling with dogs.  

Unfortunately, many of these New England beaches, or at least the entities that manage them, don't share our enthusiasm! Sometimes, we’re only granted access when the snow is falling and the wind is howling. Other times, we might not be allowed at all.

However, more often than not, we can enjoy the sand and surf with our furry friends, tails wagging and ears flapping, albeit with some restrictions.

We’ve put together a list of dog-friendly beaches across New England, organized alphabetically by state, region, and town, along with their specific restrictions.

As with all our information, we strive for thoroughness and accuracy, but things can change, so please check any beach signage for the latest restrictions. If you notice that something has changed or if we’ve missed your favorite beach, let us know! And yes, we didn’t forget Vermont! This land-locked state doesn't have ocean beaches, but it does offer beaches and swimming spots at various lakes, ponds, and rivers throughout.

As always, it’s crucial to follow the rules at all dog-friendly beaches. This means picking up after your dog and taking any trash with you since many no longer provide trash cans. Additionally, keep your dog leashed during crowded times or if you're unsure of the leash laws.  

Be vigilant with your dog near the water, as many New England beaches can have strong rip currents. While dogs may seem invincible, water temperatures can be quite chilly, particularly in northern New England, even during the summer.
