Dogs and their people love the beach. In New England, there are hundreds of miles of beaches to explore from the rocky Maine coast to southern Rhode Island.
Unfortunately, many beaches, or at least the people who control them, don't love us back!
Sometimes, we're only allowed when the snow is falling and the wind is howling. Other times, we're not allowed at all.
More often than not though, we can bring our furry friends to run on the sand and jump in the water, ears flapping and tails wagging, with some restrictions.
We've compiled a list (organized alphabetically by state, region and town), of beaches throughout New England that allow dogs. We've also added their restrictions.
As with all of our information, we try to be as thorough and accurate as possible but things change so please check beach signage for restrictions. In fact, if something has changed or we've left out your favorite beach, let us know. And no, we didn't forget Vermont! The only New England state that is land-locked, Vermont has no ocean beaches. They do however have beaches and swimming areas at various lakes, ponds, and rivers throughout the state. As always, follow the rules. All beaches require that you pick up after your dog. Many also ask that you take any trash with you as they no longer supply trash cans. Also, keep your dog leashed if the area is crowded or you are unsure of the leash law.
Keep a close eye on your dog in the water as many New England beaches have major rip currents. Dogs seem impervious but the water can also be quite chilly, especially in northern New England, even in the summer.
