Some places have just gone to the dogs! We've assembled an eclectic list of destinations around New England that we think are interesting, unusual, or just plain special. The one thing they all have in common? They are spots of interest that also welcome our furry companions.
Here are several general ideas for dog-friendly travel fun and links to specific dog-friendly options in each of the six New England states, including dog-friendly beaches, dog-friendly wineries, and more!
**Wineries**
Plan a wine-tasting tour! Imagine walking through a scenic, working vineyard, enjoying a picnic lunch, and sampling delicious wines. In many cases, your canine companion can join you. New England has a number of dog-friendly wineries, so check out the full list at Sip New England. Just be sure to call ahead to confirm dogs are welcome. If we know a winery is dog-friendly, we’ll list it on its respective Doggie Destination page.
**Breweries**
Dog-friendly breweries are plentiful in New England, and many even welcome dogs inside. They frequently host events that are both dog-friendly and family-friendly as well, making them a great spot for dog-friendly dining and socializing.
**Museums and Historic Sites**
You can still enjoy many historic sites around New England while traveling with your pets. Although dogs are generally not allowed inside museums and historic homes, they are often welcome on the grounds. If you have a traveling companion, you can take turns visiting the interiors of these historic places. A pleasant alternative to hiking, you can walk through the sculpture park at the Decordova Museum in Lincoln, MA, go back in time at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, or see one of Maine's famous lighthouses like Pemaquid Point.
**Whale Watches and Scenic Cruises**
Set sail for a seaside adventure. New England boasts a long maritime history, with lots to see on the rivers, lakes, and Atlantic coast. Enjoy whale watching, seal spotting, visiting harbor islands, taking a scenic sunset cruise, or even going fishing. Just call ahead to check if the cruise is dog-friendly. We’ll list the ones we know about on the appropriate Doggie Destination page.
**Drive-in Movies**
Evenings can be tough when traveling with kids, pets, or both! There’s nothing better than a good old-fashioned drive-in movie. However, not all are dog-friendly, so check before heading over. If we know they welcome dogs, we’ll include that information on the relevant doggie destination page.
**Boat Rentals**
Can't find a dog-friendly voyage? Do you want to captain your own ship? Rent your own ride! Many boat rental locations around New England allow dogs, from kayaks and canoes to motor and sailboats. And if we know of specific locations, we’ll make sure to list them! Just ensure your dog is ready for a sea-worthy adventure!
**Dining Al Fresco**
Nothing compares to enjoying a meal outdoors on a warm summer evening. Many restaurants, from casual seafood places in Maine to more upscale dining in Boston, will allow well-behaved dogs to join you on their deck or patio. Just call ahead to confirm.
**Apple Picking**
In the fall, many apple orchards allow dogs to join you for the traditional activity of apple picking. Many orchards also host events like hay rides and mazes, plus fall treats like cider donuts, hot cider, and pumpkins. Just call ahead to ensure it’s okay to bring your dog.
